Marshall Islands Nuclear Tests and Fallout

America tested 67 hydrogen bombs in the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958 without properly caring for the people and further covered up the radiation findings for some 40 years. Several of the previously inhabited atolls are so radioactive they are not livable. All of the common effects of radioactive poisoning began appearing immediately after these tests and the people are still plagued by serious health issues even today.

The Marshallese people are victims of the nuclear age and they are now victims of global warming and sea level rise. The atolls in the Marshall Islands are only three feet above sea level and already homes, cemeteries, and many buildings have suffered serious damage from several large storms.

Giff Johnson, a long-time resident of the Marshall Islands is an author and editor of the Marshall Islands Journal. This 29 minute interview, which includes his wife Darlene Keju’s emotional speech to the World Council of Churches, explains the ugly legacy of the nuclear age that has the world on the brink of extinction.
